QuEChERS
QuEChERS (pronounced “catchers”) is an acronym that highlights the method’s key attributes: Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe. Originally developed in 2003 by M. Anastassiades and colleagues at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the QuEChERS method was formally established after extensive validation and refinement. It is designed for the detection of multiple pesticide residues, particularly in high-moisture matrices (containing 80–95% water). As a streamlined alternative to solid-phase extraction (SPE), QuEChERS offers comparable cleanup efficiency with far simpler procedures. Known for being time-saving, cost-effective, and highly efficient, this method is especially useful when dealing with complex sample matrices—such as food and animal products—that often contain interfering substances like chlorophyll, lipids, and steroids. QuEChERS effectively minimizes these interferences through just a few straightforward steps, enabling rapid preparation of samples for pesticide residue analysis.
